La festa della Santa Croce, chiamata dai Lucchesi la festa del Volto Santo, la statua arrivata miracolosamente a Lucca (secondo la leggenda) su un carro tirato da buoi, ha un carattere sacro ed insieme profano. E’ il centro di tutta una serie di manifestazioni che durano per tutto il mese di settembre : fiere e mercati, mostre e concerti, conferenze e la riunione annuale dei lucchesi nel mondo, tornati per l’occasione nella loro terra nativa.
La sera della vigilia di Santa Croce, una processione solenne chiamata "luminara" percorre le vie della città dalla chiesa di San Frediano fino alla cattedrale S.Martino. Vi partecipano tutti i rappresentanti delle parrocchie della diocesi, le autorità religiose, civili, politiche e militari, e un corteo storico in costumi d’epoca.
Per l’occasione la città è illuminata nelle vie del centro con centinaia di lumini di cera molto suggestivi che mettono in rilievo l’architettura delle case, delle chiese e dei monumenti.
Il giorno della Santa Croce, una messa solenne è celebrata in cattedrale e tutta la città è in festa. Una grande fiera e un mercato di bestiami attirano molte persone venute da tutta la provincia e dalle campagne.
Per l'occasione viene esguito il "Mottettone",che è una composizione di tipo corale e strumentale che prevede l’impiego di una grande orchestra e di un doppio coro. Esso viene composto anno per anno a Lucca da musicisti lucchesi in occasione della festa per l'Esaltazione della Santa Croce.
Al termine della processione e del canto vi sarà un suggestivo spettacolo pirotecnico visionabile dalle fantastiche mura urbane.
