Come ogni anno il giorno 27 di aprile nella città di Lucca si celebra la patrona Santa Zita,e per l'occasione Piazza S.Frediano e piazza Anfiteatro brulicano di fiori e piante colorati per rendere omaggio alla Santa in una festività di colori.
Santa Zita nacque nel 1218 da una famiglia contadina di Monsagrati, era una ragazza umile e tanto generosa verso i più poveri, come lavoro faceva la domestica presso la ricca famiglia lucchese dei Fatinelli, presso cui si racconta che un giorno, il padrone, incontrando Santa Zita con il grembiule pieno di provviste da donare a chi non poteva permetterselo , le chiese in maniera intransigente che cosa portasse, quest'ultima rispose "Fiori e Fronde" e dal grembiule apparvero per miracolo fiori e fronde. Il 27 aprile 1278, Santa Zita morì e i Fatinelli decisero di seppellirla nella cappella di famiglia nella Basilica di S.Frediano dove ancora oggi i fedeli possono venerarla. Il 5 settembre 1696 papa Innocenzo XII sancì il culto della Santa. Santa Zita è una festa molto sentita dai lucchesi che tradizionalmente usano scambiarsi giunchiglie benedette.
Per celebrare Santa Zita, patrona di Lucca, la città allestisce tradizionalmente una mostra mercato in Piazza Anfiteatro nel periodo dell'anniversario della sua morte, il 27 aprile del 1272.
